Cincinnati's Shop for Classic BMW Restoration

The classic BMW revival is real. Cars that were affordable drivers a decade ago, the 2002, E30 3 Series, E28 5 Series, E9 coupes, are now genuine collectibles commanding serious money. That means the days of a quick-and-dirty respray over hidden rust are over. These cars deserve (and their values justify) proper restoration.

Smyth Imports has been working on European automobiles in Cincinnati for over 90 years. We’ve watched the BMW collector market evolve and built the expertise to match: from M10 four-cylinder rebuilds on early 2002s to M30 big-six overhauls on E24 coupes, from structural rust repair on Ohio-salted E30 shells to full concours restorations on E9 3.0 CSi models.

We serve BMW owners across Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Indiana from our Cincinnati facility. Whether your car needs a ground-up rebuild or just the mechanical attention to make it a reliable weekend driver, we can help.

Classic BMW Models We Restore

BMW 2002 & New Class (1962–1977)

The car that built BMW’s reputation. The 2002 is the most requested classic BMW in our shop, and for good reason: it’s light, balanced, engaging to drive, and endlessly rewarding to own when it’s properly sorted.

2002-specific restoration work:

M10 engine rebuilds

The M10 2.0-liter SOHC four-cylinder is one of BMW’s most durable engines (the same basic architecture that BMW later developed into a Formula 1 engine producing over 1,400 hp in turbo form). After 50+ years, the common issues are well understood: timing chain and guide wear (the plastic guides deteriorate with age regardless of mileage), valve stem seal hardening (blue smoke on cold startup), head gasket failure from cooling system neglect, and general oil seepage from aged gaskets throughout.

Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection

The Kugelfischer system is mechanically brilliant and temperamentally challenging. It requires specialist knowledge to rebuild and calibrate, and a lot of tii cars have had their injection systems badly modified or replaced with carburetors by previous owners. We can rebuild and properly set up the original Kugelfischer system or advise on the best approach if yours has been converted.

Carburetor rebuilding and tuning

Carbureted 2002s run Solex or Zenith units that are well past their service life. The internal diaphragms, floats, and gaskets have degraded, and modern ethanol-blended fuel attacks the original rubber and soft metal components. We rebuild to proper spec or fit Weber conversions where appropriate.

Structural rust repair

This is the make-or-break issue on any Midwest 2002. Ohio road salt attacks the sills and rocker panels, floor pans, shock towers, battery tray, trunk seams, and rear valance. We cut out rot and weld in proper repair sections rather than patching over problems. Every 2002 restoration starts with an honest structural assessment.

Suspension and steering rebuilds

The 2002’s MacPherson strut front and semi-trailing arm rear suspension is simple and effective but needs refreshing after decades of service. New shocks, polyurethane bushings, and a proper alignment transform the driving experience.

Brake system overhaul

Factory front disc/rear drum brakes are adequate when in proper condition, but corroded brake lines, seized calipers, and worn drums are common. We overhaul the complete system and can discuss front brake upgrades for cars that will see spirited driving.

E30 3 Series (1982–1994)

The E30 is the sweet spot of classic BMW ownership: more refined than the 2002, simpler and lighter than anything that followed, and available with BMW’s legendary inline-six. Values on clean examples have climbed dramatically, particularly the 325i and 325is.

E30-specific work:

M20 inline-six rebuilds

The M20 is one of BMW’s most reliable classic engines: a cast iron block with an aluminum head, SOHC, 12 valves, and either 2.0, 2.5, or 2.7 liters of displacement. The critical service item is the timing belt: the M20 is an interference engine, and a snapped belt causes piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic damage. Many used E30s have unknown belt histories, and the belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys should be replaced immediately on any car with undocumented service. Pre-1987 cars have a known tensioner design weakness that BMW addressed with an updated part.

M10 four-cylinder rebuilds

Same M10 expertise as the 2002 work, applied to the E30 chassis.

Cooling system overhaul

The M20’s plastic expansion tank, thermostat housing, and even water pump impeller are all plastic and all fail with age. On a 35-to-40-year-old car, every rubber and plastic cooling component is overdue for replacement. This is the single most important preventive service on any M20-powered BMW: overheating is what actually kills these engines.

Head gasket replacement

Aluminum head on iron block means different thermal expansion rates, which stresses the head gasket. Overheating events (from the plastic cooling components above) accelerate failure. The M20B27 “eta” engine (325e) is particularly susceptible.

Rust repair

The E30 rusts in the front fenders, rear wheel arches, rocker panels, jack points, and trunk floor. We do proper cut-and-weld metalwork, not filler and paint.

Suspension refresh

Control arm bushings, subframe mounts, tie rods, ball joints, and shocks. The E30’s handling is legendary when the suspension is fresh and vague when it’s not.

E28 5 Series (1981–1988)

The E28 is one of the most underrated classic BMWs: comfortable, fast (especially in 535i form), and still relatively attainable. We’ve done extensive work on E28s, including the 533i featured in our portfolio.

E28-specific work:

M30 inline-six rebuilds

The M30 is BMW’s “big six”: 2.8 to 3.4 liters, iron block, alloy head, and a reputation for extraordinary durability. Well-maintained M30s routinely exceed 250,000-300,000 miles on original internals. The primary concerns are timing chain and guide wear (listen for rattle at cold start), valve stem seal deterioration (blue smoke on startup), and cooling system condition.

Fuel system service

E28s span the transition from carburetors to L-Jetronic to Motronic fuel injection. Each system requires different diagnostic approaches and tooling. Carbureted and early L-Jetronic cars need a different skill set than later Motronic-managed engines.

Rust repair

Same Ohio road salt story: rocker panels, jack points, front fender edges, and trunk area are the common trouble spots.

Electrical system diagnosis

E28 electrical systems are more complex than 2002-era cars but still analog enough to trace and repair without factory diagnostic computers.

E9 Coupe (2800 CS, 3.0 CS/CSi/CSL, 1968–1975)

The E9 is one of the most beautiful grand touring coupes ever designed, and values reflect that. Full restorations on these cars are serious undertakings that justify serious investment.

E9-specific work:

  • M30 engine rebuilds (same big-six expertise as E28 work)
  • Body restoration including the complex pillarless coupe construction
  • Interior and trim restoration
  • Suspension and brake overhauls

What Sets Classic BMWs Apart in Restoration

They’re engineered, not cobbled. Even the simplest BMW, the 2002, was designed with a precision that makes it a pleasure to work on when you understand the engineering intent. Tolerances matter, assembly sequences matter, and the right sealants and torque specs matter. This isn’t a car where you slather RTV silicone everywhere and hope for the best.

The iron block / aluminum head combination is both the BMW inline engine’s greatest strength (durability, thermal efficiency) and its primary maintenance demand. Different expansion rates stress the head gasket, and cooling system neglect is what tips the balance from “will run forever” to “needs a head gasket.” Every classic BMW restoration we do includes a complete cooling system overhaul as standard.

Rust is the real enemy. The engines last practically forever with basic care. It’s the bodies that Ohio winters destroy. A BMW with solid structural metalwork and a tired engine is a great restoration candidate. A BMW with a fresh engine and rotten sills is a money pit. We assess structure first, always.

Frequently Asked Questions

My E30 325i has an unknown timing belt history. How urgent is this? Very. Do not drive the car until the timing belt has been inspected or replaced. The M20 is an interference engine: if the belt breaks, the pistons hit the valves and the engine is destroyed. Replace the belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, and water pump as a complete service. This is the single highest priority maintenance item on any M20-powered BMW.

Are classic BMWs good investments? Clean 2002s, E30 325is models, E9 coupes, and M-cars have appreciated significantly over the past decade, and the trend shows no signs of reversing. The key is buying or restoring a car with solid structural integrity: a rust-free shell with a tired engine is worth far more than a fresh engine in a rotten body.

Can you source BMW classic parts? Yes. The BMW classic parts supply chain is excellent, with strong support from both BMW Classic (the factory’s own heritage parts program) and established aftermarket suppliers. Parts availability for 2002s and E30s is particularly good. E9 coupe body panels and trim pieces can require longer sourcing times.
