Went to the Jaguar dealership, they seemed confused and had a list of what was the problem might be for my XJ8. Decided to stop by Smyth Auto. Drove in explained the issue, he pulled a car from the repair bay, showed me the issue had the mechanic fix it on the spot. I was shocked and surprised inside of a half hour out on the road. PROBLEM SOLVED and will never go any place else. A true honest and beyond qualified.

Have a 1985 xj6 with 21,000 miles. Sets in garage with me starting it every 2 or 3 weeks. I know little about car repair,but still try to do some of my own work. When 3 of the 4 windows would not move, I purchased a manual and figuared I could figure it out. I was wrong. Stopped at Smyth’s to pick his brain and get enough information to proceed. I told Sam my problem and the next thing I know he is in the car removing the parts necesarry to get at the switches. Put a test light in the right places, identified the bad switches and sent me on my way. Payment ? He asked me to go find him a new regulator for his gas grill so that he and his sidekick/helper could grill their Burgers and Hotdogs. Found a regulator at Lowes for $ 21.00.

I was looking for someone to service my 1927 Dodge Brothers Fast Four. I searched and found most wanted nothing to do with the car. I email Sam on Saturday figuring he answered back during business hours during the week, he called me, and we talked for about 20 minutes, and he asked if he could come over and look at the car to help pick the right path. He showed up on Sunday, spent 2+ hours checking things out and trying things. he recommended I drop the gas tank, get it cleaned and coated and flush the fuel system lines and change the fuel filter. I did that and the car runs great for a 95-year-old car. There is some other work that needs to be done and SAM said he would recommend people if he can’t do it. Thanks to Sam, I have a running 1927 Dodge Brothers Fast Four. Honestly, you don’t find service like this very much. He treated me as part of the family. I recommend him to everyone I talk to that needs a mechanic, and a few that were not even asking for one. It is so refreshing that Sam talks with you and down to you. I highly recommend Sam Smyth for service work on classic vehicles. He repaired my 1965 Land Rover which I brought to him with a horrible misfire which made the car basically undriveable. He was a true pleasure to work with, made the correct diagnosis of the problem, and was able to repair it quickly. The car runs better than it has in decades. His work is affordable, and lower than dealership prices. He allows his customers to source any needed parts themselves, saving money. Most importantly he has a ridiculous level of experience, and in my case, knew my car backwards and forwards, as he has owned many of these over his lifetime. Smyth Imported Car Service appeared to be the shop that could make my 1969 MGB GT run as good as it possibly could. Essentially I was requesting a expert tune up. That is what I received. Sam and his son sorted out the ignition and carburetors replacing many parts including the entire fuel system, and the gas tank. The results are gratifying. This MG is fun to drive again, almost like new. This is said after driving over 400 miles in 3 months since Smyth worked on the car.

I phoned Sam this morning right at 9AM when he opened. I’ve been working on my ’95 Mercedes-Benz E320 for four months, trying to figure out what everyone says is a common problem. someone told me to just give Sam a call and have him look at it, because he’s the European Import Whisperer. I described my problem, hoping that I could bring this baby in and get a diagnostic, even though I have had other diagnostics. Sitting on my porch, with my dogs and my coffee, I began my story with Sam. I expected to get an appointment and bring the car in when all was said and done. Nope. Not with the Whisperer. He pretty much knew exactly what the problem was, told me that they fix for it was unfortunately more than the car was worth. As an aside, she Kelley Blue Book’s for 2G’s. I have a Band-Aid fix that makes the car run beautifully, but of course with a European car you always want it in top-notch condition. We talked for a good 20 minutes, all the while I’m still sitting on my porch with my coffee. I didn’t move, I didn’t use gas, I was sitting on a cushy chair… I got the answer I needed, and didn’t spend a dime. By the time we finished, we were on a first name basis, and I told Sam I wanted to come work for him, doing marketing! Everyone needs to know who this guy is. THIS MAN IS AMAZING!

The check engine light came on in A Porsche I had just bought and wasn’t sure where to take it. I called several shops and no one could get me in for several days. Sam Smyth is a treasure! His in-depth knowledge of Rolls-Royce cars got my 1987 Corniche II convertible back on the road after he diagnosed a steering malfunction. I never would have guessed steering, but Sam found it, got replacement parts from Richard Gorman in Miami, and had me repaired in record time. I am so happy.

the block is not big enough to tell the whole story on my bmw x5 4.4, but a recent story. after a recent reaming for $1450 for cv boots, i left with an $870 estimate for replacing a “BAD leaking valve cover” the bmw store has seen the last dollar from me so researched and found sam. i didn’t even care if he would have charged more. met with him and he got out his lights and mirrors and just shook his head. the only thing he could find was minor “misting” on one of the front hold down bolts. not actual oil, just a slight discoloration. not unusual and no reason at all to replace. a lot of overhead at the bmw store i guess. see sam before just taking their word for it.

I took my Land Rover Discovery 2 there for a pre-purchase inspection. After purchasing the car I had them do some routine maintenance. Sam and Jeff are not only extremely knowledgeable when it comes to imports but are also eager to help, on one occasion spending 40 minutes on the phone to give me some tips. Even if you just have a question about your car I recommend talking to these guys first!

I had a check engine light come on and like many others I was going to take it to the dealer to get looked at. Truthfully, I did not want to pay the $120 for a diagnostic scan. I pass this shop everyday on the way to work, and was looking for an alternative to the dealer for service. I stopped in on my day off and was greeted by Sam. So I’m a bit late posting this review but I feel it needs to be done. I had stopped in during my lunch break and found no one was home. I called the number on the door and got an answer immediately. Sam told me he was right around the corner and to hang out. Within two minutes he was there with his son and invited me in. Now I was a bit intimidated asking about my old Jag X-type while there were RR and Bentleys up on the lifts. Well it didn’t take long to figure out that my fears were ill founded. You could not meet a nicer, more trustworthy family. He could have told me right away that he was booked up on bigger more expensive projects and to take a hike but that never happened. I was invited inside the office and offered a beverage. They went above and beyond what was needed as we sat and talked for about 20 minutes, going over options for my $5k car, hunting down parts and recommending a good place that would be able to see me. The only thing greater than his generosity is his knowledge of vehicles. Very impressive.

Sam and Chris make a great team and I recommend them for work on DeLoreans. Their extensive experience with 1980s European car systems helped me diagnose and fix a fuel system issue, identified an alternator problem and they also conducted an inspection and made critical adjustments to my (amateur) frame-off restoration project to make sure the car was safe for the road.

I have had trouble for 9 months trying to get a decent mechanic to fix problems on my mother-in-law’s 1979 VW Super Beetle. I spent thousands of dollars on multiple visits to shoddy mechanics trying to get this car ready for sale without success. After the owner spent 40 minutes on the phone with me (and I wasn’t even a customer) to get a history of the service to date, he told me to bring it in immediately. He put it on the lift, spent 3.5 hours fixing multiple problems and previous shoddy workmanship, and had me on the road in my “new” 33-year-old Bug. He could have charged my anything he wanted and I would have been happy. Instead, for what he charged me I’m not sure he made anything on the deal except for the fact that Sam Smyth Car Service is where I am taking my cars in the future.

I have owned a 1971 MBG since 1978. The car had been sitting and had not been driven for several years. I had it towed to Sam’s shop in Cincinnati from Northern Kentucky. Sam did a great job updating and repairing the car. He took the time to road test it with me and instructed me on how to properly drive it, particularly with the shifting and the overdrive. It runs great. Sam out did himself. I would not let anyone else work on my car.

I needed a new automatic power antenna installed on my 1991 Alpha Romero. What should have been an easy job turned into an hours long ordeal. This is my second Bentley. Years ago I took my Bentley for service from Peoria Illinois to Cincinnati Ohio to Sam’s service department. The service exceeded and surpassed the Bentley dealership service department. Fast forward to today. I called the owner, Sam on Sunday to explain to him the problem I am having locating a particular party. He spent a half hour with me, gave me a whole lot of information, and referred me to a number of sources to help me find the part I am looking for. WHAT A GENTLEMAN!!! It is guys like Sam who really make a difference in whether you view your exotic car as a pleasure or as a burden. I am going to bypass my dealer from now on and make the drive to Cincinnati for future service. I encourage all those with exotic cars to reach out to him and have him service your car.

I recently pulled a Bentley and a Rolls Royce out of a storage. Being primarily a custom shop(Pale Horse Customs), I felt I might have gotten in over my head. I just got a 2002 Volvo S80 T6 and had many questions regarding care and maintenance of a Volvo. Sam was great to talk to and very knowledgeable of just about every make and model out there. I took my 2016 Bentley that I purchased in Chicago to Sam Smyth’s Imported Car Service for service. Sam has more experience with British cars than anyone within 500 miles of his shop. British cars need knowledge. Bring it to the dealer and they will plug it into the computer and start replacing parts… sound familiar? Sam is excellent at diagnosing problems and coming up with the right solution. He is a craft mechanic who takes pride in his work and does it himself. There is no BS. His shop is in the heart of Cincinnati’s Jaguar, Range Rover and Rolls country. It never ceases to amaze me how many vintage cars have been shipped to him for repairs when I stop by his shop. MG, Triumph, Bentley’s and classic Rolls… some from down the street.. but always a few that have traveled halfway across the country for their repairs and service.

I found Sam to be quite knowledgeable on the subject as guided me through my situation. It was readily apparent that he has a deep knowledge and an equal amount of passion for his craft. He is also quite engaging. He took me from theory of operation right through to the final repair.

I have a 69 VW buggy that has been worked on by a couple different shops and no one can seem to get it running right. Stopped here and within about a half hour of doing a check of my vehicle they diagnosed the problems for only $50. They also told me what parts I needed to purchase so I could shop around for prices, and when I made a determination to come back in and I could purchase them so they could make sure they were correct. This way I would only be paying for the installation labor. Wow this shop is awesome, Wish I would have found them a couple years ago and everything would have been fixed then. Thanks Sam!!

Finally getting around to this review! I took this MGB to Sam in May ’19 to have him assess some drivability problems related to the Weber carb that was on the car when I bought it a year earlier. Sam immediately recommended we get rid of the Weber and go back to a more original solution.

Sam was very helpful in providing me very important tips for my Bentley Flying Spur. This man is clearly the expert for these machines. He has my highest recommendation for anybody seeking expert technical knowledge for Bentley automobiles. He offered to answer any question I had with just a simple telephone call. When my son’s MiniCooper Coupe had a problem losing radiator fluid I took him down to Sam Smyth’s because of the service I received when my wife’s Jaguar needed service. Sam looked over his car and made some recommendations for my son to observe about when it happens and the fluid levels. Sam wanted to make sure to identify the issue and make sure he was going right to the problem. He marked some stuff so my son knew what to look at and then later got the fix in place. No charge for the initial help and we’re confident the final fix cost way less than it could have because of their thoroughness. When you get service and professionalism like this you become a patron.

My husband, Dave Neer, and I own Solomon’s Garage in West Liberty, OH. We had a customer tow a Bentley Arnage in, literally in boxes after another shop couldn’t figure out how to reassemble it. I always learn something about the care & maintenance of my car (‘91 Alpha Romeo Spider) when I take it to Sam/CEO Tech. Who knew it was fuel injection? He akis always able to diagnose the problem (w/o a computer) & repair work is done in a timely manner. He is very good at explaining the fix needed. My 1979 Silver Shadow II was taken to Smyth’s Thursday via a rollback. Sam took a look and within 10 minutes he had it running again, smooth as silk. A fuel issue. Sam topped off all the fluids, explained the problem and he couldn’t have been more professional, even sharing half his lunch his wife brought to him. I would never dream of taking any of my cars to anyone but him for service. I knew his Dad ” back in the day” but hadn’t seen Sam Jr in 40 years. Mr. Smyth is a knowledgeable professional. I took my Bently Flying Spur to him and there aren’t many Bently authorized shops in the city who are knowledgeable to work on this type of car. Mr. Smyth and his team knew what to do. He was fair with his pricing and knew exactly what needed to be done. Dare I say he knew more than the authorized Bently dealerships in Columbus, Zionsville, and Cleveland. They gave me the runaround and would not help me. His customer service was top notch. The price is what the price is because this is a high end car, but he was more than fair. I enjoyed doing business with him, I appreciate his honesty and he is the only mechanic to ever call me back several times to see if the car was working correctly. I really appreciated that. Restoring my 1972 MGB. It’s been quite the process, but Sam has been great to work with, professional, extremely knowledgeable, honest (hard to find in this industry) and a pleasure to deal with. I regret that I have not written this review earlier. Sam Smyth is the BEST! I purchased a 1973 MGB and immediately took it to Sam Smyth to check it out from top to bottom. Well, it needed a ton of work to say the least. Total rewiring, new fuel pump, fuel line, complete exhaust, new gas tank, new carbs. New about everything you name it, it was worked on (Sam, feel free to comment on this and add everything). Sam was great at communicating to me about his work, and was very patient with me as I would drop in to see his progress. It is very rare to find someone so passionate about his work. I will only trust Sam to work on my MGB. I will happily continue to use him again, and recommend everyone to trust this man with the work!

I have a 94 Defender and Sam was great to work with. He knows his stuff and knows who to call to get parts for this vehicle which can be somewhat challenging in these times. I highly recommend him.

I Highly recommend Sam Smyth. I went looking for someone to do the body restoration of my 1964 Austin Mini and found Smyth Imports among a very short list of local shops. I made an appointment over the phone Mr. Smyth, and sent him preliminary photos of the car. Although the engine was out and he could not see it in person, he spent a good hour talking through a variety of options with me at his shop. He showed me examples of his work in progress, his methods, and helped me with ideas for pricing at various levels of restoration. Ultimately, he recommended another shop he felt would better suit my needs and budget. He recommended the towing service he uses for his business, as well as services for glass removal. Even though I am in the process of negotiating work with another shop, he offered to be available if I have any questions throughout the process, and even offered to come look at the car if I had concerns with the work. I went in looking for advice and walked away with a solid plan, thanks to the generosity of his time and his enthusiasm for the project and these little cars.

I own a Porsche and an MG. My initial experience with Sam was excellent! Very knowledgeable and super courteous with his time to trouble shoot a brake issue I had on the Porsche. Sam went out of his way to not only fit us into his busy schedule, but also to help us out financially throughout the process. I had an electrical issue on my ’06 Aston Martin DB9. As I’m new to the area I found Sam Smyth online. Based on the great reviews I took the car there. Patrick fixed the issue and the car is as new again. Sam Smyth and son, Patrick, are both very knowledgeable when it comes to exotic/older cars. I called Sam to make an appointment to diagnose my BMW X5. After telling him what was happening with my car, he diagnosed it over the phone. (The problem was that after sitting, the car was taking longer to start. Issue sticky check valve located at the fuel pump). Now it starts from cold after sitting for a few days very fast. We ended up taking for about 20 min. He didn’t want to charge me for the diagnosis. Highly recommended 👌

I can’t say enough about Mr. Smyth. I called in today with a pretty complex issue on my Land Rover Discovery. While he wasn’t able to help me directly, he actually spent a full half hour on the phone with me educating me about the issue. Giving me advice of where to go for assistance and genuinely cared about my situation. You simply do not find service and care like this anymore. Today’s society is such a turn and burn quick serv market that no one wants to take the time to be helpful anymore. I had a 1980 mg, worked on by Sam and his son, Patrick. It needed a lot of help Patrick, redid all of the wiring and new fuel system. The whole 9 yd made the car run perfect, and they did it for a very fair price. We are a nonprofit, so he really helped us out. And it’s going to help a lot of people with ALS To make their final time on this Earth a little more comfortable and hopefully find a cure for this disease. Had my 2011 Lotus for a couple years before taking it in for a tune-up. What I got back to me was a new car. More power, smoother power curve, better handling. Lotus parts are not cheap.
